What is Hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation is an overproduction of pigment – a condition in which patches of the skin become darker in color than the skin around them. This darkening may occur due to hormones or an excess amount of melanin (the brown pigment that produces normal skin color) and can be caused by sun exposure, acne, and medications.

Types of Hyperpigmentation

Sun Exposure

When the body produces more melanin to help protect the skin from prolonged sun exposure, it can result in dark spots or patches on the skin. This type of hyperpigmentation can appear on the face, hands, or other sun-exposed areas of the body. Age spots are more common on older adults or those who have been exposed to the sun for long periods of time.

Skin Inflammation

People that have experienced inflammation of the skin caused by acne, eczema, lupus, or even an injury are likely to develop post –inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Spots or patches of darkened skin can appear on the face or neck.

Melasma

Hormonal changes can also affect the skin, causing dark patches to form in large areas of the skin such as the forehead, face, and stomach. This type of hyperpigmentation is common during pregnancy and can also affect women taking birth control pills.
